On August 25-26, Minister of Energy Zhurabek Mirzamakhmudov attended a meeting of officials of the energy and water management authorities of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan in Astana, the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan said.

During the event, the parties discussed the supply of electricity in the upcoming autumn-winter season, reached a number of mutual agreements, determined the volumes and terms of supply.

The leaders also agreed to explore the possibility of introducing a mechanism for hourly electricity metering, to enter into contracts for settlement of unscheduled flows between economic entities, to revise the current terms of contracts for the settlement of unscheduled flows.

According to the Ministry of Energy, the parties also discussed the implementation of cross-border hydropower projects, in particular, the Kambarota-1 hydroelectric project and strengthening ties in the field of water and energy resources.

The next meeting is scheduled for November 2023 in Bishkek.

In mid-August, a critical situation arose with the supply of water from Kyrgyzstan to the Zhambyl region of Kazakhstan. Due to the interruption of the irrigation water supply, Kazakhstan lost crops on an area of about 560 hectares.

As reported earlier, Kazakhstan sought to amend the agreement on the use of water and energy resources of the Syrdarya river basin with Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.
