In 2023, the Tajik enterprise for the production of atlas and adras “Atlasi Khujand” plans to create a joint venture “Samarkand-Sughd Silk” with the textile workers of Samarkand.

According to Sugdnews , according to the director of Atlasi Khujand, Azimjon Gafurov, it is about a merger with an Uzbek enterprise that processes cocoons and produces silk thread.

At the same time, he noted that Atlasi Khujand already has experience of joint activities with foreign companies. In particular, cooperation with the Swiss company “LTD Bezema” has been established.

According to Gafurov, at present, the enterprise has launched the production of 120 types of atlas and 34 types of adras. Every year, working in one shift, more than 50 specialists and workers produce 50 thousand linear meters of fabric.

With the expansion of Atlasi Khujand’s capacity and the creation of a joint venture with a Samarkand company, Tajikistan can take a big step forward in reviving the sericulture industry.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, in recent years, the production of silkworm cocoons, the main raw material for silk production, has been decreasing in the republic.

In 2022, the republic produced just over 378 tons of cocoon, which is 13.9% less than in the previous year. For comparison, last year Uzbekistan harvested more than 25,000 tons of cocoon.

Issues of the legislative framework in the field of sericulture were discussed in Tajikistan

According to the forecasts of the Ministry of Economic Development of Tajikistan, cocoon production should increase to 1300 tons per year.

In accordance with the Decree of the Government of the Republic of February 29, 2020, activities for the cultivation of cocoons, silk spinning, silk spinning are exempt from all types of taxes. And the head of state, as part of his message to parliament on December 21, 2021, instructed to completely free mulberry lands from paying a single land tax within 10 years.

According to the program for the development of sericulture and silkworm cocoon processing for 2021-2024, Tajikistan hopes for the stable development of the industry through the introduction of new technologies. Over the next 4 years, 2 million mulberry trees will be planted in Sughd and Khatlon regions, and 300 thousand mulberry trees will be planted in the GRRP.

The program provides for the cultivation of more than 33,000 silkworm boxes, which will help bring cocoon production to 1,200 tons. Of these, 800 tons will be processed domestically.

In the first half of 2022, Tajikistan exported 255 tons of raw cocoon worth $1 million 500 thousand. According to the State Statistics Service of Uzbekistan, last year Tajikistan imported silk worth $1.8 million from there.

Meanwhile, world prices for raw silk show a steady growth dynamics. Since 2002, the average annual cost of raw silk has increased by an average of 17% per year and has tripled over the past period – from $15.8 per kg in 2002 to $50 in 2022.
