A five-year-old boy was killed and eight other people were injured in a rockslide near the Dead Sea on Thursday, Israeli police said in a statement.
They were among 11 individuals who were on a family trip to the Nahal David reserve and became trapped in the rockslide in a hard-to-reach section of the trail.
Israel’s Magen David Adom rescue service said in a statement that the injuries, including a four-year-old girl and two teenagers, sustained light to moderate wounds.
Military helicopters were dispatched to the scene to rescue the survivors, who were transported to hospitals.
The Israel Nature and Parks Authority, which is responsible for overseeing the country’s national parks, announced in a statement that the Nahal David reserve had been closed and hikers were required to vacate the park.
